AI Titans Convene to Develop Safety Standards Ahead of Policymakers

Four leading companies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) have jointly launched a new initiative on Wednesday. The goal of this initiative is to establish best practices in AI safety and enhance the use of technology to address significant societal challenges. The group emphasizes the importance of continuous self-monitoring within the sector to enable policymakers to establish new regulations.

The consortium consists of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The New Frontiers in Model Boundaries Forum aims to achieve four main objectives. The first objective is to promote responsible development of model boundaries, improve safety research in the field of AI, mitigate risks, and enable independent and standardized assessments of capabilities and safety.

The second objective seeks to identify best practices for responsible development and deployment of model boundaries. The initiative also aims to help the public understand the nature of the technology, its capabilities, limitations, and impact.

The third objective focuses on collaboration with policymakers, academics, civil society, and companies to exchange knowledge about trust and safety risks.

The fourth objective involves supporting the development of applications that help tackle significant societal challenges, such as addressing and adapting to climate change, early cancer detection and prevention, and countering cyber threats.

The founding companies of the forum require participating organizations to meet several criteria. This includes developing or deploying model boundaries, surpassing current advanced capabilities of models, and performing a diverse range of tasks. They also need to demonstrate a commitment to safety through technical and institutional methods.

The group intends to establish an advisory council comprising experts from various backgrounds to set its priorities in the coming months. They will collaborate with civil society organizations in designing and funding governance.

This effort comes at a time when policymakers are working to shape the future of technology, aiming to foster innovation while preserving the role of governments in AI development. This follows the earlier launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot earlier in the previous year.
